Helping Our Community Out

6/20/2022 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of  Greene County, we strive to not only be the premier cleaning and restoration company in our community, but to truly be invested in our community as well. We have so many businesses and organizations in our area who do a great job of spreading joy and love to those who have fallen on hard times, so when we have an opportunity to help one of these places out, we jump all over it. One Acre Café, here in beautiful downtown Johnson City, is one such group that really puts their money (and their food) where their mouth is. They provide meals for “suggested” prices or allow those who aren’t able to come up with the cash to spend some time volunteering in exchange for a meal. Folks can help in several different capacities in order to get some delicious food (and some of the best sweet tea I’ve ever had!) in their bellies. Recently, they reached out to us to see about services cleaning their brick floor in the dining room along with some tile in the kitchens and bathrooms. After having to be closed for a while during COVID and celebrating being able to get back to some level of normal, they wanted to brighten everything up to reflect their mood and vibes of brightening the lives of their patrons every day. It was about 3,000 square feet of floor space, so we were able to complete the cleaning in about a half day using SERVPRO Tile and Grout cleaner and a walk behind floor scrubbing machine with hot water. We were thrilled to be able to help brighten up the space at no cost to the restaurant and look forward to helping spread the word about the good work they are doing and continuing our partnership in the future.

DO VIRUSES AND BACTERIA SPREAD THE SAME WAY?

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Bacteria and viruses can both spread in many ways.

  • Contact transmission occurs when someone picks up germs from an infected surface. Touching your nose, mouth, or eyes after contact with germs on a surface can make you sick. You can also transfer germs from person to person through touch.
  • Sprays or splashes can also transmit infections. Droplets of water caused by coughing or sneezing can carry germs at distances of about 6 feet. If this fluid encounters a person’s eyes, nose, or mouth, it can cause infection
  • Inhalation occurs when someone breaths small particles of germs that are carried by air currents. These tiny particles are called aerosols, and they can travel further than droplets can. Aerosols can spread by coughing or sneezing, but they can also be spread simply by talking or breathing.
  • Sharps injuries can cause infection, if a bloodborne pathogen enters a person through the puncture. The risk of bloodborne transmission is why medical facilities have special sharps containers for disposing of used needles.

Different pathogens may spread in different ways. For instance, some germs may be too big to spread by aerosols, but they can still be transmitted by droplets. Other germs survive longer on surfaces and are thus more readily transmitted through contact. The modes of transmission have less to do with whether a pathogen is a bacteria or virus, and more about the properties of the individual type of germ.

It can take time to learn about how pathogens are spread, too. When the Coronavirus that causes COVID-19 first emerged, experts believed that it was transmitted through droplets alone, and not aerosols, and recommended staying 6 feet apart from the person next to you. As time went on, they learned that the virus seemingly could spread through aerosols. This knowledge changes the recommendations and preventative measures that people should take to avoid contracting the disease. It means that masks, previously thought to be unimportant, are very important. It also means that 6 feet between people is probably not enough, considering that the virus can survive in the air for up to 3 hours.

The transmission of pathogens can happen all sorts of ways. That means that it is important to have a thorough, regular schedule of cleaning and disinfecting.

Our Customers Love Us

7/29/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Greene County strives to make our customer satisfied on every job we do big or little.  This is just one of the five star reviews our customers have recently given us.

Mr. Lawson gave us a five star review!

After a house fire and tons of water damage, we partnered with our insurance company to begin the restoration. We were advised to choose a contractor and were given several choices for fire and water remediation companies. After an evening of reviewing companies in the area, we found that SERVPRO of Greene County had the best ratings and reviews. After talking with Tommy, the Operations Manager, we learned that this particular SERVPRO not only specialized in fire/water remediation, but was also a general contractor. Choosing this SERVPRO franchise was a no-brainer as it allowed for a more "in-house" experience and helped to minimize the number of people we had to work with. It made everything more convenient. After everything in the house was removed and demo began, I met Justin, the Project Manager. Justin was the all-star throughout the entire restoration. I was always able to reach him when a question or concern came up. If he was busy at the moment, he would always call back quickly. He was extremely professional, very easy to talk to, and was very realistic about every stage of this project. He was very real - meaning that he was very honest and never tried to hide problems that came up. Although he was the project manager, he was quick to help with any work that needed to be done on site and was very respectful to his in-house crew. You could tell that the employees enjoyed working with him. Justin and his crew (specifically Jacob) were quick to take note of any concerns that I had and they even pointed out concerns that they had regarding the house that we hadn't even noticed. When the items that were not destroyed were returned to the house, it was easy to see that SERVPRO had cleaned them and made sure that there was no water or smoke damage. The furniture smells fresh and you would never be able to tell that it had been in a house full of smoke. Overall, I would recommend SERVPRO of Greene County to restore my house again. P.S. Tommy used to be an Army Ranger. So not only is he a veteran, but his attention to detail will surprise you. I have not hired other remediation companies, but I bet that his military experience sets him apart from some of the competition. As this customer says, SERVPRO of Greene County is here to help you in your time of need and knowledgeable to help in everyway you need. Make your first call to SERVPRO of Greene County at 423-638-1104 for all your mitigation and restoration needs.

Why SERVPRO For Your Greene County Fire

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

recent house fire we got called to

A fire in your home can be a very devastating and dangerous experience. After the fire, many people will first react by wanting to clean up their home. Before you decide to cleanup the property yourself, it may be a good idea to first reach out to a fire damage cleanup company like SERVPRO of Greene County. Here are three reasons why you should hire SERVPRO for fire damage cleanup.

Fire Damage Cleanup Can be Dangerous

The first reason why you should hire a professional for fire damage cleanup is that it can be a very dangerous process to cleanup after a fire. After a fire, the area that is damaged could also have broken glass, sharp objects, and a variety of other hazards. If you are not experienced in this field, these hazards can be hard to identify. When you choose to work with a professional, they will be able to use the tools necessary to safely clear the area of all hazardous debris.

Follow Regulations

Another reason why it can be beneficial to hire a professional for fire damage cleanup is that they will be able to follow regulations. After fire damage your local community may have specific ways of how the cleanup needs to be handled. In many cases, this will prevent you from using your normal trash and dumpster service. Instead, a fire damage cleanup company will be able to follow the proper steps to ensure your home is following any laws governing how the cleanup needs to be handled.

Able to Restore Many Items

Another advantage of working with a professional for fire damage cleanup is that they can restore many items that you may consider destroyed. The cleanup crew will be able to carefully review all your personal belongings that were damaged by the fire. In many cases, an item that appears to be completely damaged could be full restored. This can include flooring, furniture, appliances, and many other items that could be expensive to replace.

If you need fire damage repair, storm damage cleanup or an odor cleaning company, contact the team at SERVPRO of Greene County today at 423-638-1104!

Risks of Leaving Smoke Untreated

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

fire damaged house

Fire and smoke damage can wreak havoc to your personal property and structures. A quick reaction can help you minimize the impact of the destruction as some of your household goods can be cleaned and salvaged if treated immediately. You should, therefore, hasten the process of hiring a professional company like SERVPRO of Washington County to help you manage the damage in a correct manner. Conversely, if left untreated, smoke and fire damage can be more devastating in the following ways:

The restoration cost increases

When the treatment process is extended, the damages begin to get worse and more difficult to deal with. If smoke goes untreated for long, the odors become more persistent and more difficult to neutralize. These challenges make the treatment process harder and more time consuming and ultimately more expensive.

Extensive damage

Smoke and ash can mix with water to produce a very corrosive element. If not cleaned quickly, this corrosive substance begins to slowly corrode away walls, floors, ceilings and any other surfaces in your home. Cleaning up quickly with soap and water is not enough. The substance requires proper cleaning with appropriate chemicals to remove it completely in order to contain the damages.

Soot deposits

Neutralizing of soot residual and deposits is an effective first clean up step. If left for long, soot can easily travel and penetrate into other rooms that weren't affected by the fire, staining the wall paint, carpet, furniture, drapes, clothing and any other household items.

Permanent damage

Your property can suffer permanent damage if not treated in a timely manner. Damage begins to set in within hours and prolonged exposure may cause permanent harm to your walls which turns yellow, metal surfaces begins to corrode, clothes stain permanently and wooden furniture which may need refinishing. It also damages the floor which may need replacement.

Following a fire, it is necessary to seek smoke treatment immediately to save yourself from the effects of prolonged exposure to smoke and to make it easier for you to restore your home. In case you suspect some smoke damage in your residence and need smoke or fire cleanup, water damage cleanup, mold damage clean up or storm damage repair contact the team at SERVPRO of Washington County today at 423-434-0046.

Happy Customers For Life

This is a recent letter a customer wrote to our corporate office about the work we did for them:

March 11, 2021

Dear Mr. Isaacson:

My wife and I recently suffered a very damaging water leak in our two-story house. The leak occurred from the main living space on the second floor and was flowing for15-20 minutes before it was detected. The damage was extensive.

Cutting off the flow was no problem, and I had a wet vac handy, so I went to work. But I also realized I was going to need serious help and SERVPRO quickly came to mind. With my vacuum in one hand and my phone in the other I called SERVPRO of Greene County.

Within one hour a local representative, Tommy Leonard was at my house. His very quick response and calm demeanor really had a positive effect - we knew we had a lot of work ahead of us but he assured us that it could all be fixed.

Two hours later a crew of six showed up and went to work. I was amazed at how little conversation there was - each one appeared to know exactly what to do. Both floors of the house were attacked simultaneously and aggressively but also with great care our furniture, my classic Jeep, and unaffected areas. The damage was far more extensive than we had even imagined, but they knew where to look and what actions were required. After six hours we looked at our home in disbelief but at the same time we knew that it was all necessary. For several more days SERVPRO employees were at our house, monitoring mitigation efforts and conducting follow up inspections. Each one was courteous and respectful.

After the mitigation period of several days we began the rebuilding process and one contractor remarked at how competent the SERVPRO crew had been. The damage done during mitigation (removing baseboards, cutting inspection holes in the ceiling, floor removal and ceiling removal) was done carefully and with consideration of ease and cost of repair.

My insurance company steered me toward a local contractor which has led to unacceptable delays in repair work. I regret that my adjuster didn't explain my option of having SERVPRO coordinate the repair work, as I am sure some if not all of the repairs would have been made by now. Lessons learned.

In closing, I want to thank you, the owner of the  Greene County franchise, and all the employees of SERVPRO who provided an exceptional level of service.

We strive to give our customers the best service in the industry!

Holiday Fire Safety Tips

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

holiday fireplace

According to the American Red Cross, winter holiday fires claim more than 500 lives each year and cause approximately $554 million in property damage. We put together some essential winter holiday fire safety tips to help reduce those numbers. Follow these suggestions from our fire restoration experts at SERVPRO of Greene County, and keep your family, home, pets and belongings safe this holiday season and throughout the New Year.

WINTER FIRE CAUSES

During the winter and all through the holidays, there are several seasonal factors that can increase the risk of fire in your home. These factors range from increased fireplace and candle usage to Christmas tree fire hazards. As beautiful as these light touches may be, it is important to keep certain holiday fire safety tips in mind. General holiday fire safety includes:

  • Never leave a room when a candle is burning. Candle fires are four times more likely to occur during the holidays.
  • Never burn wrapping paper, garbage or other debris in your fireplace.
  • Always supervise children around fireplaces, wood burning stoves and any open flames, even candles.
  • Check your space heater before using it. If it is not operating correctly or the cord is damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • Test every smoke detector in the house and make sure all of them have charged batteries. A September 2015 report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) stated that the death rate per 100 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms compared to the rate in homes with working smoke alarms (1.18 deaths vs. 0.53 deaths per 100 fires).

A few reminders this holiday season from your friends at SERVPRO of Greene County to keep you safe.  If you fall victim to a winter fire please call us 24/7 at 423-638-1104.

3 Common Types of Household Molds

10/6/2020 (Permalink)

Aspergillus is especially common in American houses

What Type Of Mold Are You Dealing With?

Mold growth is a fearsome specter to many homeowners — and for good reason. It can grow on almost any surface and spreads extremely quickly, showing up in as few as 24-48 hours after the environment has been exposed to high humidity or water damage. Some of the most common places for it to grow are:

  • Curtains or drapes
  • Furniture
  • Drywall
  • Wood flooring
  • Shower walls

Whatever type of mold is afflicting your home, you should always call your local Mohawk, TN, mold remediation experts, as the afflicted area will need professional treatment. All the same, it can be helpful to know what type of mold you're dealing with, so here's a guide to three of the most common types of household mold.

1. Aspergillus
Aspergillus is especially common in American houses. It can have many different appearances, as there are over 185 species of this type of mold and the different species present a wide variety of colors. It has long flask-shaped spores and the mold growth can build up into thick layers or swaths of mold.

2. Chaetomium
Chaetomium is a strain of mold often found in the wake of water damage. It is identifiable by its cottony texture, and will appear either white, gray, brown or black, depending on how long it's been growing. It also has a distinctly musty odor.

3. Fusarium
Fusarium is a pink, white or red mold. Whereas most molds require a relatively warm environment, fusarium can grow at cooler temperatures, and most often is found in wallpaper, fabrics or carpets. It also appears naturally in compost. This strain spreads especially quickly and will leap from one room to the next at alarming rates.
There are countless types of mold, but the treatment is the same: In the event of mold growth, you should always call in professional help to safely and thoroughly remediate and restore your home. Lucky for you, SERVPRO is Here to Help.

How To Prevent Mold Liability Claims

Mold damage in Chuckey, TN

How To Prevent Mold Liability Claims

Your rental property in Chuckey, TN, may be a lucrative investment, but too many mold insurance claims can seriously cut into your bottom line. It's even more expensive if you get sued by your tenants for failure to provide a habitable living environment. Knowing what is going on in your building and taking care of problems quickly can help you avoid costly damage that disappoints your tenants and raises your premiums.

Regular Inspections
Mold can grow any time water damage occurs. There are several places that unmitigated water damage can hide:

  • A slow leak in a pipe
  • Floor damage from unreported flooding
  • Ceiling damage from an upper floor

Inspecting your building on a regular basis is a good way to find signs of damage. It's also important to have an inspector survey the building any time there is new construction. Mold remediation specialists recommend that you have the building tested for mold if you smell a musty odor or find any indication of water damage.

Fast Mitigation
Another way to minimize mold insurance claims is to take care of problems as soon as you know about them. It doesn't take long for a mold to start growing anywhere there is excess moisture present. If a tenant reports a busted pipe, have maintenance staff repair the pipe immediately and call your water remediation company to start the mitigation process.

Quality Repairs
The lowest bidder on a project is not necessarily the best company for the job. Make sure you hire qualified professionals any time you have major repairs or additions made to your rental property. Having windows and plumbing installed and fixed correctly the first time can drastically reduce your chances of having to file a mold claim later.
Every property owner should have a policy that covers mold. It's just as vital, however, that you do everything you can to avoid having to file mold insurance claims. Protect your building and your tenants' personal property with responsible prevention strategies.

4 Things You Should Know About Mold in Your Home

Mold growth in a Tusculum, TN home

4 Things You Should Know About Mold in Your Home

If you are dealing with black mold in your Tusculum, TN, home, you are not alone. Mold is a common problem that occurs in many buildings. The following information may help you understand the issue and keep it from recurring.

1. What Is Mold?
While black mold may be the first to come to mind, there are actually many varieties. Mold is a fungus that travels and spreads via spores. Most of the time, these are not toxic and will not cause any serious problems. They can, however, affect your house in certain conditions.

2. Why Does Mold Grow in Your House?
The most likely reason that mold is growing in your building is that you have a moisture problem. This can come in the form of high humidity or a larger issue like water damage. Mold thrives on moisture, and spores can be found in most environments, so excessive amounts of water will often lead to the growth of colonies.

3. How Do You Know If It’s There?
In many cases, you will be able to see the mold growth. It often has a fuzzy texture and can appear as a discoloration on walls and other surfaces. However, if it is growing in a hidden area, you may not notice it right away. Mold also gives off an unpleasant and musty odor. The best way to determine if you have mold growth is to have an inspection done by a mold remediation company.

4. Can It Go Away on Its Own?
Mold can be annoying to deal with, so you might attempt to ignore it and hope that it just goes away. However, this is unlikely to be the case. Mold cleanup will need to be done to remove the excessive growth as well as any underlying problems that may cause it to return.
Black mold is a common problem, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. Hiring a professional will ensure the mold is removed properly, and reducing moisture levels in your home can help keep it at bay.

Caring for Wet Items After a Flood

Wet papers, books, and photographs can be fragile when wet

Caring for Wet Items After a Flood

A flooded home can cause widespread, severe damage. Water at home can damage building materials and increase the risk of mold growth. The water damage can also hurt your personal belongings. The best approach is to act quickly so you can minimize the effects of the water. With the prompt response, you can salvage many items.

Carpets
If you have carpet covering the floors of your house, the carpet can bear the brunt of much of the damage. Water at home may ruin the carpet and make it unusable. The following steps may help you to clean and dry it:

  • Pull up the carpet and dry the ground underneath.
  • Remove the water from the carpet using a high-powered extractor.
  • Apply chemicals to disinfect the carpet.
  • Let the carpet dry; use fans speed up this process.

Clothing
If water makes its way into your home, any clothes you have on the floor will have a higher likelihood of getting wet and damaged. Dry cleaning services in Greeneville, TN, are the best ways of removing dirt and other debris from the clothing. This process will also reduce the risk of mildew and mold from growing. Quick action can also eliminate unpleasant odors.

Documents
Wet papers, books, and photographs can be fragile when wet. Use extreme caution when handling these items. Carefully set out wet documents to dry. It's best to call a professional document cleanup company to safely restore these materials.

Electronics
Whether from a broken pipe, sewer backup, or another cause, water damage can destroy your electronics. You should never turn on wet electronics. Instead, unplug the devices. Next, wipe off the surfaces of the electronics and gently dry them off. Allow a professional technician to take the device apart and clean the inside.
You never want to have water at home and experience a flood. If your home is flooded, these steps can help you save your most important belongings.

5 Things To Understand About Mold Remediation

Mold remediation in a Timber Ridge, TN home

5 Things To Understand About Mold Remediation

Business owners in Timber Ridge, TN, understand the serious nature of black mold. When detected, these spores pose a serious problem for employees and clients, mandating attention as soon as possible. In order to get the company up and running smoothly, professional assistance is necessary. Therefore, contact a mold restoration company to assist in eradicating the trouble.

1. Section It Off
Microbes travel by contact and through the air. Therefore, the first part of mold cleanup is limiting movement and reducing exposure. When the crew arrives, the staff should begin surveying the premises, determining the extent of infestation. They'll perform tests and visual analysis. With that information, they'll establish borders, preventing people from entering the area.
2. Protect From the Hazard
Personal protection equipment is important to prevent breathing in the black mold. Anytime the team is present, they should take care to avoid spreading the organisms. Masks and gloves should be used at all times. In addition, no one unauthorized or unprotected should enter the work zone.
3. Remove Contamination
Reducing fungus counts has more to do with disposal than chemicals. The microscopic size of fungus is troublesome. After all, that simply means they can seep into porous items easily. Cleaners cannot always guarantee eradication. Thus, heavily infested materials should be torn out and discarded. This includes carpeting and drywall.
4. Dry and Scrub
Moisture complicates the situation, speeding up reproduction. Fix the original water leak. Then, mold remediation rules mandates airing out the property. Industrial dehumidifiers can be used for several days, pulling humidity from the rooms. While this occurs, nonporous or valuable assets undergo content cleaning.
5. Replace and Restore
The store cannot open until final testing clears the establishment, and anything taken is replaced. This means the restoration company patches walls, replaces lost fixtures and repaints.
Don't wait with black mold. When you suspect it's present, get aid. They'll not only secure the space, but they'll also sanitize it for you.

3 Reasons You Need a Professional to Check Your House For Mold

Mold hygienist in Tusculum, TN

Reasons To Hyre A Hygienist

Large amounts of moisture or water damage in your Tusculum, TN, home can lead to the growth of mold. The first signs of this fungus are often discoloration or a musty odor. It might seem like something you can handle yourself, but it is not always the best idea to try to take care of mold damage on your own. The following are some reasons you should hire a hygienist.

1. Mold Might Be Hidden

Mold growth is not always obvious. This fungus can grow in hidden areas such as behind walls or beneath flooring. If this is the case, then trying to do your own mold cleaning will likely not solve the problem. A hygienist has the training and expertise necessary to find mold that might not be in an easy-to-find location.

2. Home Tests Are Not Accurate

There is a large variety of testing kits available for determining if there is mold in your home. The problem with these tests is that they are generally not accurate. Even if you get a positive result, this does not necessarily mean that you need mold cleaning. Mold is a common fungus that can be found in most places, and there is likely a small amount present in your home. In most cases, this mold will not cause any problems.

3. You Could Accidentally Spread It

Attempting to do your own mold cleaning or inspection could lead to the fungus spreading further throughout your house. Mold spores are very small, and it is easy to spread them without knowing. When dealing with mold, specific precautions, such as containing the area and limiting air circulation, are necessary to reduce the chances of moving mold to other parts of your home.
If you think there might be mold growing in your house, the best thing to do is to hire a mold remediation company. They can send trained professionals to inspect your home to find any instances of excessive growth. They will also be able to remove the damage safely and effectively.

5 Reasons for Having a Security Fence After a Fire

The installation of a security fence should be one of the first steps after a disaster

5 Reasons for Having a Security Fence After a Fire

When a major fire occurs at your business in Mohawk, TN, everything seems overwhelming, to say the least. You may feel as if everything has been lost and that your property is completely vulnerable. However, there are measures that can be taken to gain control over the situation. The installation of a security fence should be one of the first steps after a disaster. Security fencing protects your property from:

1. Liability

Even if someone with negative intentions trespasses on your property, if they get hurt they could sue you for personal injury. Protective fencing will keep them off the contained portion of your property. You can even rent fencing with barbed wire at the top for added security.

2. Theft

Your business has already experienced trauma. If left open and unattended thieves will take advantage, grabbing whatever they can find. Thieves are opportunity-driven. A fence reduces opportunity and discourages further victimization.

3. Vandalism

The last thing your property needs is to be vandalized on top of the damage that’s already been done. Vandals can cause a significant amount of damage in a short amount of time, so a security fence can prove to be well worth the money.

4. Insurance Problems

Most insurance policies require that all reasonable measures be taken by the property owner to prevent further damage. Showing that you’ve taken this extra step will increase your chances of the maximum payout for your claim.

5. Unnecessary Delays

Protective fencing secures the property so that it’s limited only to authorized people. This keeps the area contained as safely as possible and keeps the restoration efforts moving along without the interruption of outside sources.
Installing a security fence as soon as possible will not only give you some peace of mind but will also limit any further damage to your property. Call on fire damage restoration experts to get your building back up to code.

The Path for Repairing Valuable Items After a Disaster

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can cause serious health risks.

Any disaster that brings unwanted water into the home can have devastating consequences for valuable items, such as paintings, photographs and documents. This can happen with a flood or even after a fire that has been extinguished with water. Without the proper precautions, mold can develop as quickly as 48 to 72 hours. Mold spores can show up on walls and even the surfaces of beloved paintings and photographs. Mold cleaning in Greeneville, TN, requires the services of an expert team. The techniques for restoring a painting or photograph back to good condition are specialized, often involving particular types of equipment. The services of remediation experts are often beneficial.
Mold Remediation
The proven process of ridding a home and its contents of mold contains several steps. The following actions should be taken expeditiously:

Inspection and damage assessment to determine the extent of the problem
Mold containment to prevent the spread of mold using physical barriers and negative air pressure
Air filtration with HEPA vacuums to capture microscopic mold spores and help with mold cleaning
Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to disinfect and sanitize surfaces

The cleaning process includes the removal of odors associated with mold. It also attempts to restore valuable items instead of discarding them.
Mold Damage
With sensitive items such as photographs and paintings, extreme caution should be taken. Techniques such as air drying, freezer drying, dehumidification and vacuum thermal drying may be used to restore documents. Depending on the extent of the damage from water and mold, some contents may be beyond repair, but others may be restored to excellent condition. Items such as books, x-rays, parchment, magazines and blueprints may be saved through the right treatments. In certain cases, gamma irradiation therapy is used to sterilize documents.
Mold cleaning has the ability to salvage many items after a disaster. After a fire or flood, it's important to call in the experts to treat valuable items.

What Is That Black Stuff in My House

9/22/2019 (Permalink)

Condensation on windows is usually due to inefficient ventilation

You’ve found some black, furry stuff growing around your windows. There’s been a lot of rain lately so you have an idea of what it could be. Just to be sure, you call your Greene County, TN, mold remediation specialist. The technician gives you an overview of what mold is. Here is what the specialist told you.
Mold is a microorganism, a type of fungus found anywhere. It thrives in moisture and reproduces by releasing spores that travel through the air. These spores attach themselves to surfaces and continue to grow.

Where Can Mold Be Found?

Your house may have a moisture problem. Black mold grows anywhere there is water, damp and humidity. Humidity is a leading cause of mold. Make sure the house is under 60% humidity; preferably between 40 and 50. Some air-condition units come with a de-humidifier. Otherwise, it’s best to buy several to place throughout the house. Mainly in areas that have the most moisture.

1. Kitchen and Bathroom

Faulty plumbing and old pipes can cause rapid mold growth in the kitchen and bathroom. Have your pipes checked on a regular basis to prevent mold problems. Always use exhaust fans to help dry out any moisture.

2. Windows

Condensation on windows is usually due to inefficient ventilation. Check windows for air coming in. Use a silicone-based caulk to seal the areas affected. Keep windows clean of dust.

3. Laundry Room

Continual use of the washer and dryer may lead to mold growth. Without proper ventilation, mold will begin to grow. Check for any leaks and verify that the pipes are in good working order.
Without proper mold cleanup or remediation, mold can take over the entire house. When inhaled black mold eventually leads to health problems, some as serious as memory loss, lack of energy and asthma. If you have questions about the possibility of black mold in your home, it is best to contact a mold removal specialist. The technician will use specific equipment for testing.

3 Reasons You Should Never Drive Through Floodwaters

9/13/2019 (Permalink)

Compared with the reasons not to drive on a flooded street, the reasons that tempt you are faulty.

There are many reasons someone might try to drive through the deep, standing waters of a flooded street. Perhaps they are trying to pick up their children from school. Maybe they're trying to get home to see what sort of havoc the storm is wreaking there. No matter how good the reasons to drive through flooded roads in Greeneville, TN, may seem, however, the reasons not to drive through floodwaters outweigh them.

Lack of Vision

Deep waters obscure your view of the actual street. If you can't see the pavement, you don't know what you're driving into. There could be any number of hazards below the surface:

• Fallen branches from damaged nearby trees
• Signs or other items that have washed into the street
• Sinkholes where the water has weakened the pavement

Don't risk getting hurt or stuck by something you cannot see.

Damage to Car

Your car is not amphibious. It is an electrical machine, and water and electricity don't mix. It wasn't made to go through water deeper than a couple of inches, and even that is pushing it. On a flooded street, your car may stall or die completely if too much water gets into certain parts of the car.

Danger to You

Floodwater tends to move rapidly and take everything in its path with it. This includes your car and, by proxy, you. Fast-moving water can flip your car, not only causing more damage to the vehicle but also putting your life in danger. Avoiding flooded roads may mean avoiding potentially serious injuries.

Compared with the reasons not to drive on a flooded street, the reasons that tempt you are faulty. Your children are probably safer at the school than they would be in your car, and water mitigation specialists can fix whatever is happening to your home. Follow these travel tips and only drive where you can see the road. For more information, visit http://www.SERVPROgreenecounty.com/.

Mold FAQs

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Improve ventilation, especially in high moisture areas such as bathrooms

There is a lot to learn about mold growth in Mohawk, TN, especially if you’re dealing with remediation in a high-traffic area of a building. It is recommended by the CDC to deal with the source of the problem as soon as possible to prevent further damage. The EPA also provides cleanup guides for schools and commercial buildings.

What Is Mold and Where is It Found?

Mold is a type of fungus that can be found in areas with high humidity and almost anywhere that is warm and damp such as compost piles and cut grass, or bathrooms and basements. But some mold spores can survive in dry conditions for a period of time. Common places you can find mold include:

  • Greenhouses
  • Saunas
  • Poorly insulated or poorly ventilated summer homes
  • Construction areas

How can mold affect indoor air quality?

Airborne mold spores can have a significantly negative effect on indoor air quality, so it’s very important to get the source of the mold under control, especially where many people spend a lot of time on a daily basis. The severity of the problem depends on the type of mold and how widespread the initial source of the issue is.

How can I fix damage caused by water damage and mold growth?

If permanent damage has been done, it’s hard to determine how far the mold growth has infiltrated the structure of the building without an inspection by a mold remediation professional. It is recommended that you let a mold specialist do any structural repairs, such as replacing drywall, because mold spores can become airborne and spread easily.

How can I prevent future mold growth?

There are many things that can be done to prevent future mold growth, or at least keep levels manageable. The EPA provides tips about preventing mold and a guide on remediation for commercial buildings.

Improve ventilation, especially in high moisture areas such as bathrooms.
Clean bathrooms with products that are proven to kill mold.
Avoid carpeting bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Replace carpet and upholstery that has been wet for a period of time (it doesn’t take long for mold to start growing).
Reduce indoor humidity to 30-60% using de-humidifiers and air conditioners.

Utilizing the expertise of a professional is the safest way to handle a mold problem. Because spores grow and spread so quickly, it is a time-sensitive issue, especially if water damage is new and hasn’t had a chance to set into the building structure.

Using Air Filters To Reduce Mold

5/27/2019 (Permalink)

The best air filtration system starts with a HEPA filter

Mold is always present in your home. It enters on clothing, hair, pets and shoes. While it is impossible to rid your home of all fungus in your house in Jearoldstown, TN, you can prevent most mold damage with a good air filtration system. Air filters can reduce the number of spores in your home, which can deter mold growth from happening.

Best Air Filters

The market is flooded with products that claim to purify the air. When you are looking for an air purifier, consider purchasing one of the following:

  • Oransi Max
  • BlueAir 450E
  • OV200 Air Purifier

These purifiers are top-rated machines that remove both large and small particles from the air. This improves the air quality in your home by reducing the concentration of a wide variety of particulates, including mold spores.

HEPA Filters

The best air filtration system starts with a HEPA filter. You want to make sure that it is a true HEPA filter and not just marked as a "HEPA-type" filter. The difference is in the efficiency. You can remove 99.97% of all small particles from the air with a true HEPA filter. This can reduce your need for mold cleanup even if other conditions exist for mold to grow.

Activated Carbon

A purifier that uses a pre-filter made of activated carbon can add to your machine's efficiency. Mold remediation specialists recommend machines that use pre-filters because they trap small particles such as mold spores. When used with a HEPA filter, you can significantly reduce the number of spores in the air inside your home, making mold growth less of a possibility.

A good way to avoid the need for black mold cleanup is to get rid of as many airborne mold spores as possible. You can't eliminate mold entirely, but with a great air filtration system, you can improve your air quality and deter most fungus growth.

Mitigation

When your storm response team first arrives, the technicians will likely move to perform mitigation on your building so that damage can be confined to one area. • Sealing the entrance to the room
  • Using portable sump pumps to drain the water

Mitigation can be especially helpful in keeping smaller floods from spreading, particularly in the case of black water.

Support From Corporate

Thorough Inspection of the Building

Once the building is evacuated, your storm damage and restoration service will probably inspect the affected areas and note which items can be restored, what kind of building materials need replacing and the options you have for the restoration process. This is a good time to ask your techs questions regarding cost and time frames for planned repairs.

Tips for Maintaining a Clean Office Fridge

11/26/2018 (Permalink)

Tips for Maintaining a Clean Office Fridge

It's the problem that everyone knows about but no one wants to mention. As neglected mystery lunches from days gone by and forgotten leftovers start to pile up, the office fridge takes on a life of its own. It does not take long for the break room in your building in Tusculum,TN, to start to smell like fridge mold. Mold remediation experts say that it only take 24-48 hours for mold to start to develop in an area that has excessive moisture and organic matter to feed it. It is essential, therefore, to follow these tips for maintaining a clean office fridge.

1. Put Dates on Everything

Everything that goes into a communal refrigerator should be marked with the date that it entered the fridge. Keep a pile of sticky notes and a pen in a prominent place near the fridge to encourage everyone to do this. Set a limit to the amount of days an item will be allowed to remain in the fridge. If you stick to the time limit, you should never have to worry about that dreaded mold smell.

2. Post the Rules

No one sets out to be the creator of fridge mold, but without clear rules, it's difficult to know what the office expectations are. This can lead to passive aggressive hints being passed around the water cooler and the poor morale that often follows such statements. By posting the rules right on the fridge, everyone knows what is expected.

3. Put Someone in Charge

You can have the most detailed set of rules, but without anyone to enforce them, they will soon be ignored. Designating someone with the responsibility of disinfecting the fridge on occasion and throwing away outdated items is crucial to its ongoing cleanliness.

Fridge mold is a common problem in office buildings, but it doesn't inevitably have to be your problem. If you set rules and have someone who is willing to hold the office accountable to them, everyone should be able to use the fridge without fear of mold.

  • Protecting the area from further damage
  • Removing water from the area
  • Drying the area
  • Removal of smoke damage
  • Sanitizing the area
  • Restoring the area

Understand the Damage that Can Occur After a Fire

In many cases you may have water damage as well as smoke or fire damage after a fire. Water damage can occur from several sources. Many fire suppression systems may use water to slow or extinguish the flames. The heat from a fire can cause a pipe to weaken and burst. The suppression solution from a fire hose can leave an area flooded. In many cases your insurance adjuster may be able to recommend a professional restoration service with the training and tools necessary to deal with multiple types of damage.

Understand What You Can Do

There are fire mitigation techniques that can be put in place before a fire occurs. These may help slow the spread of the flames leading to less damage after the event. In some cases your insurance adjuster may recommend a mitigation expert who can offer advice on what you can do. Options may include installing a fire suppression system, keeping extinguishers in key locations, or safety training for certain types of equipment.

Repairing your business after fire damage can be a big project. Understanding these things may help the restoration process proceed according to schedule. Choose a company that can deal with multiple types of damage and restoration, as water damage often occurs along with a fire. Understanding the steps of the restoration process may also help you estimate the time needed for repairs. Mitigation beforehand may help prevent issues before a fire happens.

How To Prepare For a Flood If You Live in a Flood Zone

11/18/2018 (Permalink)

Flood damage in a Albany,TN residence

Steps You Can Take To Help Your Home And Your Financial Security

Many homeowners may assume that their homes are safe from floods if they live away from coastal areas and large lakes and rivers. However, no residence is immune from this potentially devastating threat. To assess your home’s risk, access your community’s flood map on the FEMA NFIP website. If you reside in an area vulnerable to flooding, there are several steps you can take to help protect both your home and your financial security.

Purchase Flood Insurance

One of the best ways to protect yourself from potentially devastating flood damage is to purchase a flood insurance policy. Home insurance policies do not typically cover this peril. Without coverage, you may have to fund expensive cleanup and restoration costs out-of-pocket. If you have questions regarding flood insurance, you should contact your insurance company. You may also find useful information on the FEMA NFIP website.

Be Prepared

To help minimize potential flooding damage, homeowners residing in flood zones should safeguard vital equipment and have essential tools readily available. Adequate preparation should include the following initiatives:

  • Elevating HVAC equipment off the basement floor
  • Purchasing a sump pump and hose
  • Having a functioning backup power source accessible
  • Preparing sandbags or obtaining a reusable flood deterrent device

Accomplishing these steps may divert flood waters away from your home, protect essential equipment from extensive damage if flooding does occur and help you quickly drain standing water out of your house.

Complete Home Maintenance Procedures

As an additional safeguard, every homeowner in Albany, TN, should also complete routine maintenance procedures, such as clearing debris from gutters. If you have a basement, you should also check for cracks and holes in the walls and promptly fix any existing issues.

Be Proactive

The FEMA NFIP website offers useful tools that can help educate homeowners about both specific flood risks and flood insurance. Although it may be impossible to fully eliminate your home’s flood risk, completing appropriate proactive measures may help minimize flooding damage or allow you to avoid costly out-of-pocket expenses. Taking preemptive action is particularly essential if you live in an area susceptible to flooding.

Baby, It’s Cold outside: Monitoring Your Building for Frozen Pipes

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

If frozen pipes are left unchecked, they can lead to burst pipes in your building which can cause extensive water damage.

The winter months in Greeneville, TN, are hard on business owners, but more importantly, they are hard on your building. Your pipes are the most vulnerable to colder weather. If not adequately insulated, the water inside your pipes can freeze, leading to broken pipes and water damage. Since a costly water cleanup is most likely not on the list of any business owner, it is essential to know what to look out for in case of freezing.

1. No Water

If there is no water coming out your faucets, or the water is a slow trickle, your pipes may be frozen. When water freezes, it creates blockages of ice, which do not allow the free flow of water and which can cause excess pressure on the pipe, leading to a potential burst.

2. Odors

While it may seem strange, if strange smells or odors are permeating from your faucets or drains, it can mean that there is an ice blockage. When water freezes in waste pipes, it does not allow odors to escape or ventilate the way that they are expected to, and this leads to the strange smells coming from areas that they are supposed to.

3. Frost

You should check your mechanical closets and look for the presence of frost because this can be a reliable indicator that there is ice build up in your pipes, and if this is left unchecked your pipes can burst which will require a timely cleanup to prevent further water damage.

4. Temperature

The most reliable indicator of frozen pipes is any one of the above in combination with temperatures below 32°F, as water does not freeze above this.

If frozen pipes are left unchecked, they can lead to burst pipes in your building which can cause extensive water damage. It is better to keep an eye out for the signs and to act quickly in the event of a freeze. For more information, visit http://www.SERVPROgreenecounty.com/.
