3 Hotel Fire Prevention Tips

It is important to make sure your employees know what to do during a fire

Three Fire Prevention Tips

Approximately, 3,900 motel and hotel fire incidents occur in the United States annually, resulting in $76 million in property damage, according to FEMA. To avoid safety risks for guests and potential property damage and lost income, hotels and motels must take precautions to prevent fires. Consider these three fire prevention tips when creating your fire prevention plan.

1. Perform a Fire Risk Assessment
To protect yourself against fire hazards, you need to first understand what those hazards are. A fire risk assessment should involve identifying your risks, such as faulty wiring or broken appliances, and what you need to do to address those risks. You should record what you discovered and any changes you made. Your risk assessment should be periodically reviewed and updated.

2. Provide Staff With Fire Safety Training
Your guests will look to your employees for guidance if a hotel fire occurs, so it is important to make sure your employees know what to do during a fire. Employees should be aware of steps they need to take to prevent fires, such as proper housekeeping, and steps they should take when a fire alarm sounds, such as using the proper exit route.
It is also helpful to provide your staff with a list of people to contact when fire damage occurs. This list should include your insurance company and contractors in Timber Ridge, TN, to assist with fire restoration.

3. Install and Test Alarms
Your fire detection and alarm system is your strongest defense against widespread fire damage. Smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month. Alarms should be loud enough to wake sleeping guests and visual alarms should be provided to alert guests with a hearing impairment.
A hotel fire can pose a serious risk to guests and employees and severely damage your property. Proper fire prevention can reduce your chances of incurring a severe loss.
